Gilles Says I’ve Got Game

hughes300Gilles took me up in a Hughes 300 (Schweizer to some) and I must say.. a bit terrifying for a fixed wing guy to be going so slow with so little altitude, but eventually the cyclic and collective thing clicked, and good times were abundant. Nonetheless, my fragile and hyper-sensitive ego really liked the continuous stream of these: “Adam, c’est impeccable..vraiment impeccable.”

That was great to hear, then I realized.. if I did do the helo rating, I would have to ask for more english (or all english) since I was facing enough challenges on that hot windy south shore day in Longueuil, QC. Improving my french is always important, just not with that much moving metal nearby. There are only so many parameters the weak minded can handle simultaneously.

THE DRAWBACK(S) …. or shall I say, the DRAWBACK$?

To get your license be prepared to burn some serious time and money. Even relatively competent fixed wing people are going to spend USD $10,000 to $40,000 (depending on “who you know!”) to get the rating. If you can log dual while “working” even better. But those cases are rare. Amazingly in aviation, you meet people who invest tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars into getting their ratings, only to enter one of the weirdest labor markets known to humankind, second only perhaps to musicians and other folks who will demonstrate their craft for food.

Meet the man who will take lots of money from me if I go the helo route.
