Disciplining the Staff at RSVPair.com

Posted by adam on October 12, 2006 under Back to School

mapfWhile we run the risk of litigation, accusations of battery and other pesky modern day problems, the reality is that we deal with problems the old fashioned way at www.rsvpair.com.

The tennis racket I am holding is what I will use to “discipline” Marc Anthony with for not removing N281VP from the certificate in question in a timely fashion.

When a carrier faxes op specs and signs up on the site we respond quickly. The interesting part about our job is that we manage more plane data than anyone else in the industry, and to get the best data you need to have good users. But you also need to have good employees. And, Marc-Anthony has been bad.

He asked me sincerely why we needed to carry out this type of medieval style reinforcement, and we simply answered, “This hurts us more than it hurts you, but it is for your own good.”

Then I thought.. what if we could discipline our air carriers this way too? Now that was worthy of a blog entry.

The deal is this: The Internet craves good data.. and our data, while good, is not perfect. Why? Because air carrier users, in some cases, be they paying or free simply don’t see the need to update us with their op specs changes as frequently as they should. This is bad for many reasons. Firstly, it creates a false expectation with the user:

“Oh.. look honey, they have a King Air B200, let’s rent that for the weekend trip to visit Tiffany at Dartmouth.” Only to find out that there is no King Air for $1250 per hour at the airport in question. This clearly hurts our site and the operator in question. And driving up Interstate 93 to visit Buffy is not what the Worthington’s like to do with their time.

Secondly, it hurts the operator when we don’t get timely notification of new updates, for example, when a King Air is added to the certificate. You might hear this:

“Oh.. look honey, they don’t have a King Air B200, let’s call someone who does.”

Or.. the sin of sins.. the operator whose fleet is accurate in terms of tail numbers, but the rate and aircraft location is wildly inaccurate or dated. That would lead to one of these:

“Oh.. look honey, something must be wrong with that King Air, it is only $800 /hr., I bet you they are skimping on maintenance.”

But.. we can only punish our staff who fail to heed your instructions, and, as yet, we are not yet able to punish bad carriers, so until then, please, do what you can to remind yourselves that everyone likes updated information, especially the search engines, and if you want to be their friend, spend some time keeping your information current.
